What's Gut Health? More Importantly, why is gut health important?

Image
Let's dive into gut health because it has been playing on my mind for some time. Prior to getting down to the nitty-gritty, what is the gut?  The gut, also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, plays a vital role in overall health and wellness. What is the gut responsible for? The gut is responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and expelling waste. It is also home to a diverse community of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome, which plays a critical role in maintaining the health of the gut and the entire body. When the gut is healthy, it can effectively absorb nutrients, fight off harmful pathogens, and support the immune system. However, when the gut is out of balance, it can lead to a variety of health issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and autoimmune disorders. Additionally, research has also linked gut health to mental health and cognitive function, indicating that there is a strong connection between the gu...

Protein-An-Essential-Macronutrient

Image
As we begin to plan for our next week, and setting ourselves up for success, I want to discuss the importance of protein. According to research, protein is an essential nutrient that helps us to feel full longer. Not only does it curb our appetite, but protein also helps with muscle repair. The types of protein do not seem to matter as much as getting protein into your diet. Various students have shown the benefits of getting at least 30 grams of protein with each meal. My meal preps are centered around protein. Once I have my protein, I figure out what I want it paired with. I love tasty food, so I really want something that tastes good. If it doesn’t taste good, I don’t eat it. I also won’t stick with it. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am a busy mom with active kids, and I am not going to mis...

Wellness-Definition

A quick Google search defines wellness as " the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you're thriving." As we enter the new year, I want to focus on the five pillars of health and how it is related to our overall wellness. Who am I? I am Erin Elizabeth. I entered the wellness space many years ago when my own health took a turn, and I didn't know what was happening to me. When I discussed options with my doctor, I learned I needed to dive deeper and take responsibility for my health. All of this led me on a journey to optimize my health as well as help my family maintain a healthy lifestyle.  During my journey, I became Precision Nutrition Certified (PN L1 NC), Precision Nutrition Level 1 Sleep, Stress Management, and Recovery Coach (PN L1 SSR), Girls Gone Strong Certified (GGS Certified), an Arbonne Consultant, and a Paloma Health Advocate. Each of these items, I am pl...
