During my journey, I found I prefer to get my protein from whole-food sources. Most of the time I meal prep the night before, so I am ready for the week. My meal preps are centered around protein. Once I have my protein, I figure out what I want it paired with. I love tasty food, so I really want something that tastes good. If it doesn’t taste good, I don’t eat it. I also won’t stick with it.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am a busy mom with active kids, and I am not going to miss out. Because of this, I supplement a meal or snack with protein powder. I have used Whey Protein, Paleo Pro, and Arbonne’s Protein Powder with pea protein.
When I used Whey Protein, I felt like I was not digesting it properly. For me, I found I ended up being gassy and bloated afterward. That defeats the purpose of drinking a tasty protein shake. From my research, I learned that whey protein is the skimmed-off portion of dairy or the leftovers. My body can handle dairy for the most part, but I need quality dairy. We will discuss dairy at another time. Places to get whey protein; just about anywhere.
The next protein powder that I used regularly was Paleo Pro. I like the Ancient Cacao. No bloat. No nothing. After a year or two of using Paleo Pro, I noticed an aftertaste that I couldn’t shake. When scanning the ingredients, I noticed they changed a couple of their ingredients. I was bummed to say the least. I was back in search of a new protein powder because I wanted to get my protein in when I am on the go. Paleo Pro has three flavors that I found at Sprouts and Whole Foods: Aztec Vanilla, Mayan Mocha, and Ancient Cacao. All those flavors are still available at both those locations, and I am sure you can also purchase them on Amazon.
With some hesitation, a friend suggested Arbonne’s protein powder. I say with hesitation because it is made with pea protein, and frankly, who likes peas? 🤣 Not this girl. Peas are the items I moved around my plate when I was a kid. Why would I willingly drink a shake made with peas? After much prodding, I caved. Surprisingly, it was amazing. Arbonne has many flavors, and it is gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. The ones I have tried are chocolate, raspberry chocolate, banana pancake, and Simply 1 Strawberry. Three of these flavors are limited-time offers, so I can’t promise they are available to try if you are interested. Other flavors available are vanilla, simply 1 chocolate, simply 1 vanilla, coffee, simply 1 coffee, and simply 1 peppermint mocha. Simply 1 protein powder has less sugar. The sugar is from a Stevia plant, so if you are looking to limit your sugar intake, I recommend going with the Simply 1 flavors.
Each protein powder can be used with ice and water. Or you can utilize protein powder to make tasty treats like the following two recipes:
